Tips for Maximising Small Office Spaces
Many start-ups will begin in small office spaces, and whilst some struggle, others thrive by making the most of the space they have. There are a range of ways that this can be achieved, including making spaces more functional, investing in good furniture, and decluttering.
Declutter and Go Paperless
Take the time to clear out any clutter or furniture that is no longer needed. If there are items laying around that haven’t been touched in the last year or two, it’s safe to say they won’t be missed.
Another way to save space is by going paperless. By implementing a digital filing system, offices can get rid of physical filing cabinets and unnecessary storage, enabling them to make better use of their available office space.
In the same way, keeping the office organised will stop it feeling cramped. Shredding any unnecessary documents, getting rid of excess materials, and requiring employees to keep their individual spaces organised can make a big difference.
Make Common Spaces Functional
If an office is made up of lots of small offices or cubicles, it can quickly begin to feel cramped. Sometimes this cannot be avoided, as people need their own space to work; however, where possible, it is a good idea to make common spaces functional and versatile.
Common spaces such as conference rooms should be set up in a manner that allows employees to use the space when they need a change of scenery, giving them space to stretch out both creatively and physically.
Furniture
When working with a small office, embrace it. Rather than trying to cram in bulky furniture, choose furniture that is size-appropriate. Opt for furniture with a smaller footprint that is more open than traditional, bulky office furniture. Modular or adaptable furniture is one way to make the most of a small space. Natural Light
Without adequate natural light, small spaces can feel even more claustrophobic; letting in natural light can help make even the smallest rooms feel bigger. Embrace the windows a space has and make sure curtains and blinds let in as much light as possible.
